George Orwell (His Life)
George Orwell was born June 25, 1903 in India. His birth name is Eric Arthur Blair. He was of English descent, his parents being Richard Walmesley Blair and Ida Mabel Blair. He had two sisters, one older, one younger. The children and their mother all moved back England when Orwell was one. He exceeded well in school for his academic intelligence, attending St. Cyprian's school on a scholarship. (The Complete Works of George Orwell, 2003) However, he had a very difficult time socially fitting in at school. Many social challenges and bullying may have influenced the social divisions in Animal Farm. As he wrote these social challenges down, he wrote in the perspective of an older person, looking down at his younger child self and pitying himself. This could be how he attained the skills to write Animal Farm in a childish, story-tale like manner.
Orwell finished secondary school, but he did not have enough money to go to college. Instead, he joined the Indian Imperial Police in 1922. (Gradesaver, n.d.) In this occupation, he realised how difficult British colonial life was. He came to pity the poor and lower class people who had to suffer in this life. He was also under the direction of oppressors who were promised with a good life for their misdeeds. This was one reason that led him to write Animal Farm, he wanted to show what power-hungry oppressors could do to their society. He resigned from this calling in 1927.
This job in the police triggered his mind into thinking deeper. He could easily sympathise these lower class people, but he could not empathise, so I decided to put himself in their shoes. For some time, Orwell lived on the streets as a beggar, not wearing substantial clothes and living on the border line to starvation and death. This traumatic experience gave him a first hand connection to this class and make it easier to write about their struggles in a book.
Orwell was not done with empathising the lower class yet though. Instead he took a different angle entirely, now focusing on the people that were putting these people into such a crisis. He fought in the Spanish Civil War, against the Spanish Communist Party. (Gradesaver, n.d.) Going into the war he opposed the other side, since he believed in Socialism. However, the experiences in the war as well as getting shot increased his hatred for Communism. He saw it not only as a form of government but a place where dark resides. This is why Orwell wrote Animal Farm. He wanted to portray Communism and show the secrets behind it that make it so evil. He took Stalin as an evil member of Communism, so he reflected him in Animal Farm as well as the rest of the Russian Revolution. He also wanted to weave in Animals as characters because Animals can't interact as humans. It is obviously fictional, alluding to the fact that Communism is fictional.
